Udon Thani Night Market: Where the City Comes Alive After Dark

Check Nakara Availability Now

Udon Thani changes character when the sun goes down.

Around the railway station and UD Town, food stalls light up, grills start smoking, music drifts across the open-air spaces and locals arrive for dinner, shopping and a wander through the market.

This is one of the easiest places in Udon Thani to experience the city rather than simply visit an attraction.

The main night-market area sits along Thongyai Road beside Udon Thani Railway Station, with UD Town, food courts, open-air restaurants and the Train Night Market all within an easy walk of each other.

An Evening in the Heart of Udon Thani

During the daytime this part of town is busy but relatively ordinary. By early evening it becomes one of Udon Thani's liveliest areas.

Street-food stalls open, tables fill and shoppers move between clothing, accessories, snacks, restaurants and small market stalls.

UD Town itself combines conventional shops with open-air dining and market-style areas. Across the road, the Train Night Market feels more informal and local, with rows of traders selling food and inexpensive everyday goods.

You can comfortably explore both in the same evening.

Come Hungry

Food is the best reason to visit.

Expect the smells of charcoal, grilled meat, chilli, garlic and fried food before you have decided what to eat.

Typical choices include som tam, grilled chicken, pork skewers, sausages, noodles, seafood, fried snacks, desserts and fruit drinks. The area is also a good place to discover the Vietnamese influence that forms an important part of Udon Thani's food culture.

There is no need to choose one restaurant and stay there.

The better strategy is to walk, buy a little from several stalls and keep going until you are full.

That normally takes less time than expected.

Isan on a Plate

For visitors new to northeastern Thailand, the market is a painless introduction to Isan food.

Look for grilled chicken, sticky rice, spicy salads, grilled pork neck and the enormous variety of sausages, skewers and things being enthusiastically placed over charcoal.

Som tam is everywhere, but remember that Isan spice levels can be serious. If you do not normally eat very hot food, asking for "mai phet" or "phet nit noi" may save the remainder of your evening.

And probably your following morning.

More Than Food

The market area is also good for casual shopping.

Clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, cosmetics, phone accessories and inexpensive household items appear alongside the food stalls. Some sections feel like a traditional Thai night market, while UD Town is more polished and organised.

The Train Night Market has the stronger everyday-market atmosphere. UD Town provides the brighter, more contemporary side of the district.

Together they work surprisingly well.

You can browse local stalls, eat dinner, stop for a drink and then continue into UD Town without needing transport between them.

A Market Used by Local People

One of the best things about Udon Thani Night Market is that it has not become an attraction built purely for tourists.

Most evenings you will see families eating dinner, teenagers meeting friends, workers grabbing food on the way home and couples wandering between stalls.

Visitors simply join in.

That gives the area an everyday quality that can be missing from famous night markets in Thailand's biggest tourist destinations.

You are not watching local life from the outside.

For an hour or two, you are part of it.

When Should You Visit?

Although businesses in the wider area operate throughout the day, the market atmosphere really develops from roughly 5pm to 6pm onward as food stalls open and the temperature drops. UD Town itself is currently listed as open daily from 10am to 10pm, while the Train Night Market listing runs later.

For photographs, arrive shortly before sunset.

You get the transition from blue evening skies to illuminated stalls, neon signs and warm market lighting.

For atmosphere, roughly 6.30pm to 8.30pm is a good target.

Weekends tend to feel busier.

Easy to Reach

The location could hardly be simpler.

The market district is immediately around Udon Thani Railway Station on Thongyai Road. If you arrive in Udon Thani by train, you can walk directly into the area. From most central hotels, it is only a short ride by Grab, taxi or tuk-tuk.

UD Town also has parking, although weekend evenings can become busy.

If you are staying centrally, leaving the car behind is often easier.

Don't Confuse It With Udon Thani Walking Street

Udon Thani has several markets, and the names can become confusing.

The Udon Thani Walking Street near City Hall is a different market. Tourism Authority information describes it as a Friday and Saturday evening walking street featuring food, handmade goods, local products and performances.

The night-market district beside the railway station and UD Town is the better option when you want somewhere lively on almost any evening.

If you happen to be in Udon Thani on Friday or Saturday, however, there is absolutely no rule preventing you from doing both.

Consider it research.

Why Udon Thani Night Market Is Worth Visiting

Not every memorable travel experience needs a temple, museum or dramatic natural landscape.

Sometimes it is simply a city doing what it does every night.

That is what makes Udon Thani Night Market worthwhile.

Come as the lights switch on. Walk without much of a plan. Try something you cannot identify. Buy something you probably do not need. Sit down with a cold drink and watch the city move around you.

For visitors wanting to understand modern Udon Thani, this is one of the easiest places to start.
